Full English translationConcealing and keeping good deeds secret: Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, may God have mercy on him, said: “No servant of God has ever been sincere and loved fame.” [Siyar (its abridgment) 2/626]. Ibrahim ibn Adham, may God have mercy on him, said: “No servant of God has ever been sincere and loved fame.” Al-Dhahabi, may God have mercy on him, said: “The sign of a sincere person who may love fame, without realizing it, is that if he is reproached for it, he does not become angry or try to justify himself. Rather, he acknowledges it and says: ‘May God have mercy on the one who pointed out my faults to me.’ He should not be conceited and unaware of his faults, indeed unaware that he is unaware, for this is a chronic disease.” [Siyar (its abridgment) 2/708].
