The way of the early Muslims with trials and tribulations: On the authority of Musma’ ibn ‘Asim, who said: ‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Zayd, may God have mercy on him, said to me: “Whoever intends to be patient in obeying God, God will grant him patience and strength for it. And whoever resolves to be patient in refraining from disobeying God, God will help him in that and protect him from it.” Then he said to me: “Do you think that you will be patient for the sake of His love, abstaining from your desires, and then your patience will be in vain? He who thinks this or anything similar of his Lord has thought ill of his Master.” He said: Then he wept and said: “His blessings come morning and evening for those who disobey Him, so how can those who love Him despair of His mercy?” [Ibn Abi al-Dunya’s Encyclopedia 4/54]

The way of the early Muslims with trials and tribulations: Umar ibn Dharr, may God have mercy on him, said to a man who had been harmed by his neighbor: “Be patient, my brother, for by God, I do not think there is anything more valuable than the reward of patience. My brother, be patient, for through patience you will attain the treasure of its people. Know that patience is a gift, and it is only given to those who are honored in their Master’s sight. So seize the opportunity to acquire it as much as you can, for you will find its reward in this life and the next, God willing.” [Ibn Abi al-Dunya Encyclopedia 4/59]
