Full English translationThe way of the early Muslims with trials and tribulations: On the authority of Hudhayfah al-Mar'ashi, he said: We entered Mecca with Ibrahim ibn Adham, may God have mercy on him, and Shaqiq al-Balkhi had performed Hajj that year. We met beside the place of circumambulation, and Ibrahim said to Shaqiq: On what did you base your principles? He said: We based our principles on the fact that if we are provided for, we eat, and if we are denied, we are patient. Ibrahim said: That is what the dogs of Balkh do. Shaqiq said to him: And on what did you base your principles? He said: We based our principles on the fact that if we are provided for, we give preference to others, and if we are denied, we are grateful and praise God. Shaqiq stood up and sat before Ibrahim and said: O master, you are our master. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 2/492].
