The Salaf’s stance on clothing: Al-Ahnaf bin Qais, may God have mercy on him, said: I have not lied since I embraced Islam except once. Umar, may God be pleased with him, asked me about a garment: How much did you pay for it? So I reduced its price by two-thirds. He said: This garment of yours is beautiful, were it not for its high price. [Ibn Abi Al-Dunya Encyclopedia 7/490].

The Salaf’s stance on clothing: On the authority of Zayd ibn Wahb: On the authority of Ali, may God be pleased with him, that he was criticized for his clothing, so he said: This clothing of mine is further removed from arrogance, and more likely to encourage a Muslim to follow my example. The Salaf’s stance on clothing: On the authority of Waqdan, he said: I heard Ibn Umar, may God be pleased with him, and a man asked him what clothes he should wear. He said: That which the foolish do not despise you for, nor the wise criticize you for. He said: What is it? He said: That which costs between five and twenty dirhams. The Salaf’s stance on clothing: On the authority of Sufyan, may God have mercy on him, he said: They disliked two things that made one famous: fine clothes that made one stand out and people look up to them, and shabby clothes that made one look contemptible and humiliated one’s religion. The Salaf’s stance on clothing: Maslama bin Abdul Malik entered upon Umar bin Abdul Aziz, may God have mercy on him, to visit him, and said to his sister Fatima: I see that the Commander of the Faithful is recovering, so if you would change his clothes, she remained silent.
