Full English translationHigh aspiration: Abu Muhammad, al-Shafi'i's sister's son, said: My mother said: Sometimes in a single night we brought the lamp before al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, thirty times, or fewer or more. He would recline and reflect, then call: Girl, bring the lamp. She would bring it forward, and he would write what he wrote, then say: Take it away. I asked Abu Muhammad: What did he intend by having the lamp removed? He replied: Darkness brings greater clarity to the heart. [Hilyah (abridged edition) 3/124].
