The Worship of the Salaf: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may God have mercy on him) said: Sins only occur when the soul does not obey what it has been commanded to do. When one obeys what is commanded, one does not commit what is forbidden, for they are opposites. God Almighty said: “Thus it was, that We might avert evil from him” [Yusuf: 24]. And He said: “Indeed, My servants - you have no authority over them” [Al-Hijr: 42]. The sincere servants of God are not led astray by Satan. Misguidance is the opposite of guidance; it is following one's desires. So, whoever's soul inclines towards something forbidden should worship God as He has commanded, sincerely devoting his religion to Him, for that will avert evil and immorality from him. (Majmu' al-Fatawa 10/314)

The worship of the early Muslims: Burd, the freed slave of Ibn al-Musayyab, said to Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, may God have mercy on him: I have not seen anything better than what these people do. Sa'id said: What do they do? He said: One of them prays the noon prayer, then he remains standing with his legs together until he prays the afternoon prayer. He said: Woe to you, Burd! By God, this is not worship. Rather, worship is reflecting on the commands of God and refraining from what God has forbidden. [Al-Siyar (its abridgment) 1/488].
