Night Prayer: On the authority of Muhammad bin Mus’ar, may God have mercy on him, he said: My father would not sleep until he had recited half of the Qur’an. When he finished his portion, he would roll up his cloak, then sleep on it briefly, then he would jump up like a man who had lost something and was looking for it. He would only use the tooth-stick and perform purification. Then he would face the mihrab, and he would do the same until dawn. He would make a great effort to conceal this very carefully. [Ibn Abi Al-Dunya Encyclopedia 1/280].

Night prayer: Umm Sa‘id ibn Alqamah al-Nakha‘i said: A low wall stood between us and Dawud al-Ta‘i, may Allah have mercy on him. I would hear his movement for most of the night, without his settling down. She said: Sometimes I heard him say: ‘Concern for You has displaced my other concerns and separated me from sleeplessness. My longing to look upon You has destroyed my desires and come between me and pleasures. In Your prison, O Generous One, I am sought.’ She said: Sometimes he recited a verse melodiously, and I felt that all the delights of this world had gathered in his melodious recitation. He was alone in the house and did not light it—that is, he did not light a lamp. [Ibn Abi al-Dunya Encyclopedia 1/280].
