The state of the Salaf with regard to the Qur’an: On the authority of Abdullah bin Masoud, may God be pleased with him, he said: This Qur’an is the banquet of God, so whoever is able to learn something from it, let him do so. For the houses emptiest of good is the one in which there is nothing of the Book of God, and the house in which there is nothing of the Book of God is like a ruined house that has no inhabitant, and Satan leaves the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is heard. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 1/119].

He said: The people of Mada’in heard that Salman al-Farisi, may God be pleased with him, was in the mosque, so they came to him and began to flock to him, until about a thousand had gathered around him. He said: So he stood up and began to say: Sit down, sit down. When they sat down, he began to recite Surah Yusuf, and they began to disperse and leave until only about a hundred remained. So he became angry and said: Did you want to hear embellished speech? Then I recited the Book of God to you and you left! [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 1/163].
