قال حاتم الأصم رحمه الله: القلوبُ جَوَّالة، فإمَّا أنْ تجول حول العرش، وإما أن تجول حول الحُشِّ. [السير (تهذيبه) 2 / 962].
Hatim al-Asamm, may God have mercy on him, said: Hearts are wanderers, so they either wander around the Throne, or they wander around the latrine. [Al-Siyar (its abridgment) 2/962].
عن ثابت البناني رحمه الله قال: نية المؤمن أبلغ من عمله، إن المؤمن ينوي أن يقوم الليل، ويصوم النهار، ويخرج من ماله، فلا تتابعه نفسه على ذلك، فنيته أبلغ من عمله. [الحلية (تهذيبه) 1 / 406].
On the authority of Thabit al-Banani, may God have mercy on him, he said: The intention of the believer is reaches further than his action. The believer intends to pray at night, fast during the day, and give from his wealth, but his soul does not follow him in doing that. So his intention is reaches further than his action. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 1/406].
عن أبي عمران الجوني رحمه الله قال: وعظ موسى بن عمران - عليه السلام - قومه بني إسرائيل يومًا، فشق رجل منهم قميصه، فأوحى الله تعالى إلى موسى: قل لصاحب القميص لا يشق قميصه، ليشرح لي عن قلبه. [الحلية (تهذيبه) 1 / 403].
On the authority of Abu Imran al-Jawni, may God have mercy on him, he said: Moses, son of Imran, peace be upon him, preached to his people, the Children of Israel, one day, and one of them tore his shirt. So God Almighty revealed to Moses: Tell the owner of the shirt not to tear his shirt, let him open his heart to Me instead. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 1/403].
عن شفي الأصبحي رحمه الله قال: إن الرجلين ليكونان في الصلاة مناكبهما جميعًا، ولما بينهما كما بين السماء والأرض، وإنهما ليكونان في بيت، صيامهما واحد، ولما بين صيامهما كما بين السماء والأرض. [الحلية (تهذيبه) 2 / 178].
On the authority of Shafi’ al-Asbahi, may God have mercy on him, he said: Two men may be praying with their shoulders together, yet the distance between them is like the distance between heaven and earth. And they may be in the same house, fasting the same fast, yet the distance between their fasts is like the distance between heaven and earth. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 2/178].
عن حسان بن عطية رحمه الله قال: إن القوم ليكونون في الصلاة الواحدة، وإن بينهم كما بين السماء والأرض، وتفسير ذلك: أن الرجل يكون خاشعا مقبلاً على صلاته، والآخر ساهيًا غافلاً. [الحلية (تهذيبه) 2 / 266].
Hassan bin Atiyyah, may God have mercy on him, said: “People may be praying together, yet there is a difference between them like the difference between heaven and earth.” The explanation for this is that one man may be focused and attentive in his prayer, while another is distracted and heedless. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 2/266].
