Sincerity and condemnation of hypocrisy and pretense: Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, may God have mercy on him, said: O you who conceal yourselves: Know that with God there is a scandalous questioning; God Almighty said: “So by your Lord, We will surely question them all about what they used to do.” [Al-Hijr: 92, 93]. Sincerity and condemnation of hypocrisy and showing off: A young man was reciting to Al-Hasan, may God have mercy on him, and he liked his voice. He said: O Abu Saeed, I have been blessed with this voice, and I get up at night, and Satan comes and says: You only want to be heard. Al-Hasan said: Your intention when you get up from your bed. Sincerity and condemnation of hypocrisy and showing off: On the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn Shurayh, may God have mercy on him, he said: Whoever does something good intending only to please God, then someone appears before whom he wants to show off that deed, God rewards him for the original intention and disregards the later one. And whoever does something good intending only to show off, then thinks or it occurs to him that he makes the end of it for God: God rewards him for the later intention and disregards the original one.
