Sincerity and condemnation of hypocrisy and showing off: Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, may God have mercy on him, said: If two men were traveling together and one of them wanted to pray two rak’ahs, but he left them for the sake of his companion, that would be showing off. And if he prayed them for the sake of his companion, then it would be associating partners with God. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 3/40].

Sincerity and condemnation of hypocrisy and pretense: Shaqiq al-Balkhi, may God have mercy on him, said: The example of the believer is like a man who plants a palm tree, fearing that it will bear thorns, and the example of the hypocrite is like a man who sows thorns, hoping to harvest dates. Far from it! Far from it! Whoever does good, God will reward him only with good, and the righteous will not be placed in the ranks of the wicked. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 2/502].

Sincerity and the condemnation of hypocrisy and pretense: Abu Sulayman al-Darani, may God have mercy on him, said: “Those who came to ruin—Iblis, Qarun, and Balaam—did so only because the origin of their intentions was based on deceit, so they returned to the deceit that was in their hearts. And God is too generous to bestow sincerity upon a servant and then take it away from him.” [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 3/193].

Sincerity and the condemnation of hypocrisy and showing off: On the authority of Ahmad ibn Abi al-Hawari, he said: A man asked Abu Sulayman al-Darani, may God have mercy on him, about the closest way for a servant to draw near to God, the Almighty and Majestic. He wept and said: Someone like you is asking about this? The best way for a servant to draw near to God is for Him to look into your heart, and you do not want anything from this world or the Hereafter other than Him. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 3/182].
