Kindness to parents and maintaining kinship ties: Al-Ma’mun said: I have not seen anyone more kind to his father than Al-Fadl ibn Yahya, may God have mercy on him. His kindness to him was such that Yahya would not perform ablution except with heated water while they were in prison. The jailer prevented them from bringing in firewood on a cold night, so when Yahya went to his bed, Al-Fadl got up and went to a kettle in which water was heated, filled it, and then brought it close to the lamp’s fire. He remained standing with it in his hand until morning. [Uyun al-Akhbar 3/102].
