Kindness to parents and maintaining kinship ties: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari said to Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, may God have mercy on them both: “O Abu Abd al-Rahman, there was a man among our companions who had gathered more knowledge than you and I have gathered. He was on his deathbed, and I prompted him to say the testimony of faith. I said to him: ‘Say: There is no god but God.’ He said: ‘I cannot say it!’ Yet when addressed about other things, he could speak. He said that twice, and he continued in that manner until he died! He said: So I asked about him, and it was said: He was disobedient to his parents, so I thought that he was deprived of the word of sincerity because of his disobedience to his parents.” [Ibn Abi al-Dunya’s Encyclopedia 5/360].
