Full English translationDefining knowledge, how to acquire it, and explaining its virtue: Mu'adh ibn Jabal, may Allah Most High be pleased with him, said: Learn knowledge, for learning it for Allah Most High is reverence, seeking it is worship, discussing it is glorification, researching it is striving in jihad, teaching it to one who does not know is charity, and offering it to those worthy of it is a means of drawing near. It is the landmarks of the lawful and unlawful, the beacon of the people of Paradise, solace in loneliness, a companion in estrangement, a conversation partner in solitude, a guide in ease and adversity, a weapon against enemies, and religion among the eminent. Through it Allah Most High raises peoples and makes them leaders and imams in goodness, whose traces are followed, whose deeds are emulated, and whose judgments are deferred to. The angels desire their friendship and brush them with their wings. Every moist and dry thing seeks forgiveness for them, even the fish and creatures of the sea, and the predatory and domestic birds. Knowledge brings hearts to life out of ignorance and illuminates sight out of darkness. Through knowledge one reaches the stations of the virtuous and the highest rank in this world and the Hereafter. Reflecting upon it equals fasting, and studying it equals standing in prayer. Through it ties of kinship are maintained and the lawful is known from the unlawful. It is the leader of those who act, and action follows it. The fortunate are inspired with it, and the unfortunate are deprived of it. [Hilyah (abridged edition) 1/188].
