Prioritizing: On the authority of Abu Juhaifa, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood between Salman al-Farisi and Abu al-Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with them both). Salman visited Abu al-Darda’ and saw Umm al-Darda’ in a disheveled state. He asked her, “What is the matter with you?” She replied, “Your brother Abu al-Darda’ has no worldly desires.” When Abu al-Darda’ arrived, he offered food and said, “Eat, for I am fasting.” Salman replied, “I will not eat until you eat.” So he ate. When night came, Abu al-Darda’ went to pray. Salman told him, “Sleep,” so he slept. At the end of the night, Salman said to him, “Get up now.” So they both got up and prayed. Then Salman said, “Your soul has a right over you, your Lord has a right over you, your guest has a right over you, and your family has a right over you. So give everyone their due.” They went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. He said, “Salman has spoken the truth.” [Narrated by al-Bukhari, no. 5788]

And a plate worth a daniq that I give to a brother of mine in God is more beloved to me than a dinar that I spend in the cause of God, the Almighty and Majestic.” [Sifat al-Safwa 1/373].

Prioritizing: On the authority of Khaythama: Abu al-Darda’ (may God be pleased with him) said: “I was a merchant before the advent of Islam. When Islam came, I tried to combine trade and worship, but they could not coexist, so I abandoned trade and devoted myself to worship.” Al-Dhahabi (may God have mercy on him) said: “The best course of action is to combine both with jihad.” What he said is the path of a group of the early Muslims and Sufis. Undoubtedly, people’s temperaments differ in this regard. Some are capable of combining both, like Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and Ibn al-Mubarak. Some are incapable and limit themselves to worship. Some are strong at the beginning and then become incapable, and vice versa. All are permissible. However, it is essential to fulfill the rights of one’s wife and children. [Siyar (its abridgment) 1/269]
