Full English translationPrioritizing: Abu Sulayman al-Darani (may God have mercy on him) said: “Whoever is engaged in a voluntary act of worship and finds pleasure in it, and then the time for an obligatory prayer arrives and he does not interrupt his pleasure in the voluntary act, is deceived in his voluntary act.” [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 3/192]. Al-Dhahabi said: “Here is a matter of differing opinions: Is seeking knowledge better, or voluntary prayers, recitation, and remembrance of God? As for one who is sincere to God in seeking knowledge and has a sound mind, then knowledge takes precedence, but with a share of prayer and worship. If you see him diligent in seeking knowledge but with no share in acts of devotion, then this is a lazy, lowly person, and he is not sincere in his good intentions. As for one whose pursuit of hadith and fiqh is driven by personal desire and love, then worship is better for him. In fact, the difference between them is a matter of preference. This is a general classification.” [Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' (its abridgment) 2/690].
