Full English translationGood Character: On the authority of Mansur ibn Ammar, he said: A pious man entered upon Harun al-Rashid, may God have mercy on him, one day and said, “O Harun, fear God!” So he took him aside and said, “O man, be fair to me. Am I worse than Pharaoh?” He said, “Pharaoh.” He said, “Then are you better than Moses?” He said, “Moses.” He said, “Do you not know that when God Almighty sent him and his brother to him, He said, ‘Speak to him with gentle words’ [Ta-Ha: 44], yet you have confronted me with the harshest of words? You have neither learned from God’s teachings nor adopted the manners of the righteous.” He said, “I have erred, and I seek God’s forgiveness.” So he said, “May God forgive you,” and ordered that he be given twenty thousand dirhams, but he refused to take them. This is good character. [Al-Muntazam 8/328]
