Full English translationOn the authority of Ibrahim, he said: I heard Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad, may God have mercy on him, say: For a man to approach a putrid carcass is better for him than to approach these people – meaning the ruler – and I heard him say: A man who does not mix with these people, and does not add to what is obligatory, is better in our view than a man who prays at night, fasts during the day, performs Hajj and Umrah, strives in the way of God, and mixes with them. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 3/17].
