Condemnation of disputation and argument in general: Salm ibn Qutaybah said: Bashir ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Bakrah, may Allah have mercy on him, passed me and asked: What keeps you sitting here? I replied: A dispute between me and a cousin of mine who claimed something in my house. He said: Your father did me a kindness, and I want to repay you for it. By Allah, I have seen nothing more destructive of religion, more diminishing of honorable conduct, more wasteful of pleasure, or more preoccupying to the heart than a dispute. I got up to leave. My opponent asked: What is the matter? I replied: I will not dispute with you. He said: You have recognized that it is my right. I replied: No, but I honor myself above this, and I will leave you with what you want. He said: Then I ask nothing of you; it is yours. [Ibn Abi al-Dunya Encyclopedia 4/325].
