What can you say after sinning? Prayers to read with a heart returning to Allah, with English meanings and sources.

Begin with sincere repentance ↓التوبة الصادقة تكون بالإخلاص لله، والإقلاع عن الذنب، والندم عليه، والعزم على عدم العودة إليه. وإذا تعلق الذنب بحق آدمي زاد شرط رابع: رد الحق إلى صاحبه أو طلب عفوه على الوجه المشروع. لا يكفي ترديد الصيغ مع الإصرار على المعصية، ولا تيأس من رحمة الله.
Sincere repentance is for Allah: stop the sin, feel remorse for it, and resolve not to return to it. If another person’s rights are involved, there is a fourth requirement: restore those rights or obtain a valid pardon. Saying words while deliberately persisting in sin is not a substitute for repentance. Never despair of Allah’s mercy.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that a person who sins, purifies themselves well, prays two rakahs and asks Allah’s forgiveness is forgiven. This accompanies sincere repentance and its conditions.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ.
I ask Allah to forgive me.
The Prophet ﷺ reported seeking forgiveness 100 times daily. Muslim 591 also records seeking forgiveness three times after prayer; these are separate contexts.
صحيح · Authenticأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ.
I ask Allah to forgive me, and I return to Him in repentance.
The Prophet ﷺ described seeking forgiveness and repenting more than seventy times a day.
صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ.
O Allah, You are my Lord; none deserves worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and promise as far as I can. I seek Your protection from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and confess my sin. Forgive me: only You forgive sins.
The hadith gives glad tidings of Paradise to one who says this with conviction by day and dies before evening, or by night and dies before morning.
صحيح · Authenticأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ.
I ask forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, besides whom none deserves worship, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all; and I repent to Him.
The report promises forgiveness even for fleeing battle. This narration specifies no threefold count. Read it with sincere repentance; the promise is no reason to persist in wrongdoing or withhold people’s rights.
حسن (دار السلام) · Hasan (Darussalam)رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ.
My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. You are the One who accepts repentance, the Merciful.
Ibn Umar reported counting the Prophet ﷺ saying these words one hundred times in a single gathering.
صححه الألباني · Sahih, al-Albaniسُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي.
Glory and praise belong to You, O Allah, our Lord. O Allah, forgive me.
Aishah described the Prophet ﷺ frequently saying this in bowing and prostration.
صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ، دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ، وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ، وَعَلَانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ.
O Allah, forgive every sin of mine: the small and the great, the earliest and the latest, the public and the hidden.
A supplication the Prophet ﷺ made in prostration.
صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا، وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، وَارْحَمْنِي، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ.
O Allah, I have greatly wronged myself, and only You forgive sins. Grant me forgiveness from Yourself and show me mercy. You are the All-Forgiving, the Merciful.
The Prophet ﷺ taught Abu Bakr this prayer to use in his salah.
صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ بَاعِدْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ خَطَايَايَ كَمَا بَاعَدْتَ بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ، اللَّهُمَّ نَقِّنِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَايَ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ.
O Allah, put my sins far from me as You have separated east from west. Purify me from sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt. Wash away my sins with water, snow and hail.

صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَنْتَ رَبِّي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَاعْتَرَفْتُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي جَمِيعًا، إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ.
O Allah, You are the Sovereign; none deserves worship except You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and acknowledge my sin. Forgive all my sins: only You forgive sins.

O Allah, forgive what I have done before and what comes later, what I have concealed and what I have made public, my excesses and what You know about me better than I do. You bring forward and You hold back; none deserves worship except You.

صحيح · Authenticرَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي وَجَهْلِي وَإِسْرَافِي فِي أَمْرِي كُلِّهِ، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطَايَايَ وَعَمْدِي وَجَهْلِي وَهَزْلِي، وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
My Lord, forgive my error, my ignorance, every excess in my affairs, and what You know better than I do. O Allah, forgive my mistakes, my deliberate wrongs, my ignorance and my foolish joking; all of that is in me. Forgive my earlier and later deeds, my hidden and public acts. You bring forward and hold back, and You have power over everything.

صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي.
O Allah, You are ever Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me.
The Prophet ﷺ taught Aishah these words for Laylat al-Qadr. They may also be used in supplication at other times.

The Prophet ﷺ said this on leaving the toilet.

Glory and praise belong to You, O Allah. I bear witness that none deserves worship except You. I ask Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.
The report describes forgiveness for the idle talk of that gathering when these words are said before leaving. People’s rights still have to be restored.
حسن صحيح عند الترمذي · Hasan sahih, al-Tirmidhiاللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا، اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلَا تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ.
O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and old, our men and women, those present and those absent. Let those You keep alive live in faith, and those You take die in Islam. Do not deprive us of the reward for him, and do not let us go astray after him.

صححه الألباني · Sahih, al-Albaniاللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ، وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ، وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ.
O Allah, forgive him, show him mercy, grant him safety and pardon him. Honour his welcome and make his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse his sins as You cleanse a white garment of dirt. Give him a better home, family and spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from punishment in the grave and the Fire.
A supplication of the Prophet ﷺ during the funeral prayer.
صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالرَّفِيقِ.
O Allah, forgive me, show me mercy and join me to the exalted company.
Reported during the Prophet’s final illness.
صحيح · Authenticاللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي، اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي، اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي.
O Allah, I ask You for wellbeing in this life and the next, and for pardon and wellbeing in my religion, worldly affairs, family and property. Cover my vulnerabilities and calm my fears. Protect me from before and behind, from my right and left and from above. I seek refuge in Your greatness from sudden destruction beneath me.
The Prophet ﷺ regularly made this supplication in the morning and evening.
صححه الألباني · Sahih, al-Albaniاللَّهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ، لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ، أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ.
O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon and protection from Your punishment. I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot encompass Your praise; You are as You have praised Yourself.
Aishah heard the Prophet ﷺ saying this in prostration.
صحيح · Authenticرَبَّنَا وَٱجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةًۭ مُّسْلِمَةًۭ لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Our Lord, make us both submit to You, and make from our descendants a community submitting to You. Show us our rites of worship and accept our repentance. You are the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful.

Our Lord, we put our trust in You, turn back to You, and to You is the final return. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the disbelievers, and forgive us. Our Lord, You are the Almighty, the Wise.
