The stance of the early Muslims regarding fighting during times of strife and the regret of those who participated in it: On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar, may God be pleased with him, he said: “Our situation in this strife was like that of a people who were walking on a well-known path. While they were thus engaged, a cloud and darkness enveloped them, so some of them turned right and left and lost their way. We remained where we were when this happened, until God cleared it from us, and we saw our original path, recognized it, and followed it. These are but young men of Quraysh, fighting over this power and this world. I would not trade these two worn-out sandals of mine for what they kill one another over.” [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 1/220]
