Full English translationScrupulousness: On the authority of Amr ibn Muhajir, he said: Umar, may God have mercy on him, desired apples and said: If only we had some apples, for they are good! So a man from his family stood up and sent him apples as a gift. When the messenger brought it to him, he said: How good it is, and how pleasant its smell and how beautiful it is! Take them away, boy, and convey my greetings to so-and-so and tell him: Your gift has been received by us in a way that pleases you. Amr ibn Muhajir said: So I said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, your cousin is a man from your family, and you have heard that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to eat gifts but not charity. He said: The gift was a gift for the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, but for us it is a bribe. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 2/221].
