قال الفضيل بن عياض رحمه الله: لو أنَّ لي دعوةً مستجابة ما جعلتها إلا في إمامٍ، فصلاحُ الإمام صلاحُ البلاد والعباد. [السير (تهذيبه) 2/777].
Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad, may God have mercy on him, said: If I had a supplication that would be answered, I would only use it for a ruler, for the righteousness of the ruler is the righteousness of the country and the people. [Al-Siyar (its abridgment) 2/777].

On the authority of Abdul Hamid bin Abdullah bin Muslim, that the jailer said to Ibn Sirin, may God have mercy on him: When night comes, go to your family, and when morning comes, come back. He said: No, by God, I will not be an aid to you in betraying the Sultan. [Al-Siyar (its abridgment) 2/569].
عن زيد بن أسلم قال: كنت مع أبي حازم رحمه الله في الصائفة فأرسل عبد الرحمن بن خالد إلى أبي حازم أن ائتنا حتى نسائلك وتحدثنا. فقال أبو حازم: معاذ الله، أدركت أهل العلم لا يحملون الدين إلى أهل الدنيا، فلن أكون بأول من فعل ذلك، فإن كان لك حاجة فأبلغنا. فتصدى له عبد الرحمن وسأل منه وقال له: لقد ازددت علينا بهذا كرامة. Zayd ibn Aslam said: I was with Abu Hazim, may Allah have mercy on him, on the summer campaign. Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid sent word to him: Come to us so that we may question you and you may narrate to us. Abu Hazim replied: Allah forbid! I knew people of knowledge who did not carry religion to the people of worldly life, and I will not be the first to do so. If you have a need, come to us. Abd al-Rahman went to him and questioned him, saying: Through this you have gained further honor in our eyes. [Hilyah (abridged edition) 1/525].
وقع الذباب على المنصور فذَبَّه عنه، فعاد فذَبَّه حتى أضجره. فدخل جعفر بن محمد رحمه الله، فقال له المنصور: يا أبا عبد الله لِمَ خلق الله - عزَّ وجلَّ - الذباب؟ قال: ليُذِلّ به الجبابرة. [صفة الصفوة 2/498].
A fly landed on al-Mansur, so he swatted it away. It returned, and he swatted it away until he was annoyed. Then Ja`far ibn Muhammad, may God have mercy on him, entered, and al-Mansur said to him: “O Abu `Abd Allah, why did God, the Exalted and Glorified, create flies?” He said: “To humble the tyrants with them.” [Sifat al-Safwa 2/498]
عن سفيان قال: جاء ابن لسليمان بن عبد الملك فجلس إلى جنب طاووس فلم يلتفت إليه، فقيل له: جلس إليك ابن أمير المؤمنين فلم تلتفت إليه، قال: أردت أن يعلم أن لله عبادًا يزهدون فيما في يديه. [الحلية (تهذيبه) 2 / 33].
On the authority of Sufyan, he said: A son of Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik came and sat next to Tawus, but he did not turn to him. So it was said to him: The son of the Commander of the Faithful sat next to you, and you did not turn to him. He said: I wanted him to know that God has servants who are indifferent to what is in his hands. [Al-Hilya (its abridgment) 2/33].
